Sleep S3 vs drives spun down

Featured Replies

I am trying to ascertain the benefits of putting the unraid system into S3 sleep vs Just having all of the drives in the array spundown for the time the server is not being used.

Electrically I assume the PSU's are still running but with reduced output hence less power draw on their input side.

Are the Fans all still running ( the ones powered from the Mobo and the ones powered from the 12 volt bus and the ones in the PSU's.

Has anyone done a power draw analysis?  I intend to do that as I do have the Equipment to do it with, but I am not ready yet.   Too busy populating the array with movies. Maybe this weekend.

In most of the systems that I've worked with S3 sleep state, the fans stop running.

I think the power draw is from 3-10 watts.

Is it worth it, It all depends on how often you access the system.
