VMs but not gaming

Featured Replies

I'm sorry if I'm missing the right threads, but I'm looking to spec out a "reasonable" server build - I've got 4 disks or so that I'll use to start, and will expand that.

Right now I'm running Unraid on an old HP desktop machine, but I badly need more RAM and drive bays/ports.

My question is graphics... I'm not a gamer, but I run a couple of VM's as "primary" machines, in addition to various Dockers/Plugins serving stuff. None of it very taxing, except maybe the VMs at times. I don't need a lot of graphics, I just want to drive a reasonable sized monitor with output from the VM(s) passed through. Just desktop and simple graphics work... framerate doesn't matter :-)

So, my understanding is I need a GPU, but I assume it doesn't have to be much. I also assume motherboard video doesn't cut it (if it exists in this day and age).

Pointers?

Thanks!

Bruce

I've used a mixture of GT 710s and r5-230s and they work fine for non-gaming use.

The atis are a bit easier to use in the primary slot than nvidias.
