Petabyte Project Hardware Reccomendations

Featured Replies

Hello, Lime Tech Community:

The build I am planning is a file/cloud/UnRaid/plex server. This system is going to be built in a 4u 45 bay chassis.

The requirements of the build will be as follows:

  1. To be able to stream from multiple devices at once
  2. To be able to use all 45 drives
  3. To be powerful enough to run VR simulations/games

Any recommendations??

Well currently, unRAID only supports up to 30 drives in the array, the rest you will have to use as individual drives outside of the array.

As for the rest, a dual core Xeon setup with eight to twelve cores per CPU and at least 64GB of RAM should be adequate.

Watch Linus’ video on Petabyte project.

You’ll get a feel for the main way it’s do-able at the moment.

TLDR
You’ll need a clustered file/node system to do it
UnRaid can’t

Although true, it would be possible to set up 2 unRaid installs, one bare metal and one virtual, and pass through a controller card to the VM.

Alternatively, you could do in a single unRaid install if you use an Areca card where you could configure RAID0 arrays that look like individual disks to unRaid. (Not saying this is a great option, but feasible.)

You could potentially reach out to Limetech for a custom release. They'd probably say no, but if your intent is to do a YouTube video featuring unRaid and defining a huge array, who knows. Maybe they'd agree. I think the 30 limit is not a technical limitation, but more of a practical once - that dual parity is not sufficient to provide adequate protection of such a large array.

If I can find a legit seller on ebay that isn't going to ship me D.O.A. SAS9207-8E cards, then maybe I'd have a working proof of concept for you. Ugh I must be on my third seller by now I might as well just pay retail.

@limetech I gave you one possible solution to this. Allow two Pro keys in the same system, find my old post. I've found nothing in my research so far that has proven it not possible. You can do it!

Perhaps this is possible, perhaps not. In any case this would require adjustments to the current system and GUI. And then it becomes a matter of priority, whether time is spent on this or other developments. Keep in mind that Limetech is a small company with limited resources.
