November 1, 20178 yr While I know these drives are designed for surveillance systems, is anyone using them in an unRAID server currently? Any issues?
November 1, 20178 yr While I do not have direct experience with them, I've seen them discussed here before. The consensus seems to be that they work just fine with unRAID. They don't come up as a topic very frequently, I suspect that aren't used in all that many unRAID installations - but that may be a result of the way they are marketed and priced.
November 2, 20178 yr I am not sure, if it's a good idea to use the Purples. It's a DVR-Disk for constant Video Recording and not designed for a NAS and they need more Power then the REDs. Also important: Only 300.000 load cycle counts (like the WD-Green, the REDs have 600.000) - not recommended, if you use sleep for your HDDs. Description: The firmware includes, for example, a function called "Allframe", which always stores video images completely on the purple HDD using ATA streaming. Allframe is to prevent recorded images from being lost. The WD hard drive also uses caching algorithms with time-limited error correction designed for low bit-rate, write-intensive streaming applications typical of surveillance applications.
