Drive Temperatures

Featured Replies

I was wondering what other people were seeing for drive temperatures in their unraid servers. Specifically those of you with large server (ie. Norcos with 20-24 drives). Both when idle and active.

At idle, they power down. Worse case is parity check where low power drives may be in the 30C and 7200rpm drives at or over 35C.

I have a 36 bay Supermicro rack mount server, it's in my office, so depending on the temp in my office the drives fluctuate. Right now the temp in my office is 30 degrees celsius, so my drives are anywhere from 37 to 28, but unRAID averages them out to 32.4

Mine are a little on the cool side right now and will only get worse as the basement gets colder due to winter.   My drives are in the high 20 now and will be high teens to low 20s this winter.  I prefer they be in the low 30 because a drive can get too cool just like it can get too warm.  However in mid summer when the basement is the hottest the temp is mid to upper 30s so better.  I've thought about adjusting fan speed to raise the temp a little in Winter just haven't done that yet mostly because I know I would forget to adjust it again in summer and then overheat the drives.

I'm averaging 36, but have several 39-41. I might need to pop it open and see how all the fans are doing. Maybe get replace them with some better fans. I even have this large fan sitting in front of my rack.
