November 19, 20178 yr Hello all. I had a self built NAS that I had for a few years that I was running freeNAS. I decided to switch to unRAID for it's ease of expandability and docker support. I precleared one disk, and was ready to go nuts so I plugged my other 6 drives in and now the computer would turn over with power. In fact, if I plug any harddrive into my box and attempt to power on, the system immediately shuts down. If no drives are attached, it will boot right into unraid. Otherwise something gets tripped and off goes the system. Several of the drives that were working fine just moments before now will no longer spin up on another computer. Any ideas? Anyways.... I am assuming the motherboard is shot and going to build a temporary unit that I need to last for about 2-3 years as I transition to a different living situation and can build a 'dream' system. I primarily need the system to hold about 5-10 disks and transcode 2-3 plex streams as well as run SAB, couchpotato, sonarr etc. Nothing too heavy. Here's what I have so far and would appreciate any advice if the system isn't going to work. This is rushed since my whole network/entertainment etc depends on having a box up and running and right now I'm stuck with the situation described above. What is your budget? 400-700 How many drives do you want your server to be able to support and how much capacity do you need? 5-10 drives 15-25TB Is expandability important to you? If so, what's your long term goal? I will be upgrading to a long term system in 2-3 years. Are you interested in running any unRAID Add Ons (see here)? If so, which ones? Be specific. Plex, SAb, Sonarr, Couchpotato Do you want to run green/low power drives or faster 7200 rpm drives? If you don't have a specific need for 7200 rpm drives, then choose green drives. Greens on this system. Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build? This includes drives. Yes see below. If you already have parts in mind, please oh pretty please post links to them so that we don't have to look them up. Planning on following: Intel i7 4770 LGA 1150 Have for free from old build. Fractal Node 804 ASUS Q87M-E/CSM LGA 1150 Intel Q87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard FSP Dagger 500W Mini ITX Solution / SFX 12V / Micro ATX 80 Plus Gold Certified Full Modular VR / 4K Ready Gaming Power Supply (SDA500) Kingston 24GB (3 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model KVR13N9K3/24 I have 6x 3TB WD Greens right now. As stated above however, most of them simply stopped spinning up after attempting to boot up unraid with them attached for the first time. Not sure what will work once i get my new system in. I will likely be buying Red 8TB's during the black friday sales and they are not included in this budget. I recognize the system will not use ECC since the i7 4770 does not support it.... but it is a placeholder system and I have a free 4770, so it would be a shame not to utilize it. Unfortunately, that drove most of my decisions for the build. Again... this is not a long term solution, just need it for about 3 years. Needs it for a plex server with sab, couchpotato, sonarr. Need to order ASAP and will be doing so by end of day today! PS - If anyone could help with why my old NAS suddenly refused to boot and seems to be eating drives i'd appreciate it! I've replaced the power supply to no avail. The moment a power connector is attached to a drive (hdd, sdd doesn't matter) my computer powers off. Edited November 19, 20178 yr by Exos
November 20, 20178 yr Even if it is just a temporary solution, i would prefere a Board with 8 SATAs and Intel-NIC like the ASRock Z87 Extreme4 - its even cheaper than the ASUS. EDIT: Sorry - no µATX - its an ATX-Board... crap Then i would suggest the ASRock H97M Pro 4 or the Z87M Pro4 - both with Intel-NICs, cheaper then the Asus and have also 3 years warranty. Have a H97M Pro4 on my PC and it works without issues. And about the RAM: I would prefer DDR-1600 - Use 2x8GB, 4x4GB or 4x8GB - the CPU works faster... I am using this RAM for my H97M Pro4 (2x4GB) and also on my unraid-server (4x4GB): https://skinflint.co.uk/crucial-ballistix-sports-dimm-kit-16gb-bls2cp8g3d1609ds1s00-a739120.html About the Power-supply: It has only 5 SATAs and 2 IDEs - max.9 drives Edited November 20, 20178 yr by Zonediver
