Use for slim-CD space in some rackmount server chassis?

Featured Replies

Several of the rackmount chassis available have a space for a slim (laptop style) CD drive. However, unRAID doesn't support CD drives to my knowledge, so I got to thinking; perhaps you could put some USB ports, or a card reader, or something else in that space.

Sadly, my Googling around came up dry. Is anyone aware of such a thing? Am I crazy?

Well, you can easily mount a 2.5" (laptop) hard drive or SSD in that space.  That's probably the most common usage of it right now since no modification is needed.

That's a fair point for some chassis. I'm using the Norco 4220 though, so I've already got two 2.5" drive bays there. I poked around some more on the interwebs, but it seems there's just no market for something of that nature. :(

adonics has some devices that fit into slim bays. I know of a CF adapter and other card reader.

I don't see a need other then removable media or a SSD.

Actually I would put a slim dvd-rw in there. One day you may be able to write to it with cdrecord.

At least that is a goal of mine. I just don't have the time right now to go down that path.
