move all hard drives into new unraid tower

Featured Replies

hi,

Ive got two unraid towers going. one has 10 drives, the other 24. both are liceneded OK.

I have backed up all my data from the a 24 bay array (it wasnt much) now I want to move the 10 drives into the 24 bay tower.

Is there anything special I have to do when I install the 10 drives into the new tower to make that main? without losing any data on the 10 drives? Is it just plug and play? will unraid complain where the other 24 drives went?

If you also move the boot flash drive then there won't be any problems.

Wherever you wind up putting the 24 drives you'll also put the flash drive that went with them.

I can't move the USB drive due to licening issues. I have two USB drives with a pro licence and a plus licence. I want to move the drives onto the pro licence, but that particular USB drive has a diffrent drive config on it.

Then you're going to have to do a new config and reassign the drives (check off that parity is already valid)

You could try this method.  First, make a printout of all Disk assignments.  Second, on both server, your go to 'Settings'  >>  'Disk Settings' and Set 'Enable Auto Start' to "No", Next back up both flash drives to folders on your PC.  From the back up of the Ten disk server Flash Drive do the following on the 24 Disk Flash drive:

  • However, it is safe to copy these files in the config folder, network.cfg, ident.cfg, share.cfg, and shares/*.cfg (but no others!). These files will get your system quickly back on the network, with its old name.
For reference, the section Files on flash drive can help you decide which files and folders to keep and which ones cannot be kept.

Then install the HD's from the ten disk server in their new home, reinstall the 24 disk Flash Drive and start the server.  Verify the drive assignment.  IF correct, start the array and see if everything is properly assigned and running correctly
