Unable to connect to shares

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I have finished rebuilding my server and turned it on and I'm having a bit of an issue, I can access the web-GUI without a problem, but I don't see server under mappable drives. So I looked on the forum and saw that I can access the shares also by going to file explorer and typing "\\tower\media" for example. Doing this then prompts me to do the login both of my windows password and my unraid login but then it says windows can't access it. Even though it is a public share!!

I did all the solutions I found here such as changing to "WORKGROUP", checking that server,TCP/IP NetBios helper and SSPD Discovery were active (they were), checking that DIscovery was on and that I was on a private network.

Even my WD cloud system is having the same exact issue on my computer.

I also tried smb from my mac into a public share and there if I login as root it says I do not have sufficient permissions wtf.

Thanks in advance for your  help =)

"root" has no access to shares

Problem endemic to Windows basically since day 1.  Microsoft problem.  So much easier to just add a quick access shortcut to the server (by using the IP address).

"For home and small business users who use Network Neighborhood to locate Windows computers, you shoud map drives to the computers so that you no longer have to browse for them.

So far as I've been able to gather, the bulk of problems like these result from credential caching within windows.  Clear the stored credentials in Credential manager.  Beyond that, Microsoft's decision a while back to try and force people to use their MSN account to log in to Windows, instead of local accounts has caused no end of problems across the board for access to all NAS's.  I can't help you out because I have never had any problem ever accessing my shares, be they private, secure, or public but I've also never in my life took Microsoft's force feeding me a MSN account.

Well I just tried what you said about making a new user and deleting the credential and trying again. Unfortunately the issue is still persisting, I just keeps bouncing back the credentials I put in of this new user. As far as the msn thing, mine is a university account, don't know if that is the issue. It also started doing this.

Make sure that you are being bit by this bug/feature:

Be sure to read the next dozen posts after this one.

Also make sure that your unRAID server ends up as the Local Master.  This often fixes many SMB problems.  You might want to read this:

You can also go to the Control Panel and find the Credential Manager and delete all of the Windows Credentials.  This has been known to solve a lot of login issues.

I just finished trying these solution out and I still cant access the shares from my win 10. On top of these I tried putting these changes on SMB:

max protocol = SMB2_02

I can still access the shares without issue from my mac...

Any other suggestions?

Try this;  Open up Windows Explorer.  On the address bar type the following:

\\IP_Server_Address\media

And see what happens.

If that doesn't work, there is a utility which will find out which computer your PC 'thinks' is the Local Master. It will also tell what computers your PC has identified on the LAN.  You can download it from here:

    https://scottiestech.info/2009/02/14/how-to-determine-the-master-browser-in-a-windows-workgroup/

Please, this Utility us not supported by LimeTech and was not developed by a member of the unRAID community, so use due caution as you would on any download from the Internet.  However, I will say that I have downloaded it in the past and have not had any issues from using it.

Yeah, just upgraded to win 10 since for my work they want us to work on this POS system. I might revert if I can't find a solution...

I am sorry but I don't run Win10.  You might try googling the Error Message Number from LANscanner to see if that turns up anything.  But I don't hold out much hope.  (Believe it or not, there are a lot of Win10 users who aren't having problems.  One of the big issues is that there are so many varieties of Win10 that even the Gurus who follow MS for a living have a hard time keeping them all straight.  I, personally, am going to stick with Win7 until I have to replace the hardware.  Hopefully by that time, everything will be fixed...)

Could you post up more information about what you found and a link to it?  It could help the next person who encounters the problem.

Ok so I found a workaround. Basically using this program called netdrive (https://www.netdrive.net/download/) you can map drives normally without issue. My guess it bypasses any win 10 BS.

Thanks!  I did a bit of checking.  It is a pay-to-use solution (Beyond the 14 day trial period).   This being the business model, I would certainly expect it to be without any unexpected additional software not necessary to the operation of the described package.  Additional information and costs can be found here:

           https://www.netdrive.net/

and
