November 27, 20178 yr (unRAID 6.3.5) I have an array that is almost full (over 90% of the storage space is used), now if I add a new hard drive to the array to expand my storage will unRAID move the data of my all most drives to rebalance the array if I'm in High-Water allocation ? November 27, 20178 yr Community Expert UnRAID never moves data between drives automatically. Such moves always have to be specifically requested by the user. If you want to move data between drives then the unBalance plugin can help with this.

Depending on how the "Split-Level" Structure for each share is setup in conjunction with High-Water. Only new data will be written to the new drive as long as the "Split-Level" allows for data to be written on an alternate disk.

November 27, 20178 yr Why would you want to generate all that I/O and increase fragmentation. Just let it start using the new disk and filling it up. Drives have their highest performance on the outer sectors, and by moving data to the drives you are consuming the fastest sectors with an initial flood of activity. Enjoy the little bump in performance, and leave the data safely where it is. Sorry, but I see no value in rebalancing disk usage.

Except if you have some disk organization preferences, like a whole season of a TV show on one disk, or all movie files on a single disk. Otherwise, I agree 100% Yes, proper settings should take care of that up front, but mine got messed up somehow. I'm slowly working my way through all my movies to reorganize them so each movie and associated files exist only on a single disk.

If you had the wrong split level and are trying to sort that out - good luck! I could see that being a challenge.

Possible solutions (i) create a new share with the right split levels and move the files to that share using mc (ii) use unbalance to consolidate the directories

Just pointing out a possible reason to want to move files from where unRAID initially put them.Sent from Tapatalk

I didn't recommend unbalance, I recommended diskmv and consolid8 script that can do what you want with a single command for all movies/folders.

I just looked into consolid8, and wow! It does just about everything I suggested to jrodreguez would be great features to add to unBalance! Of course, you already knew that. I've got it running on my Movies share now, and will hit TV when it's done. Thanks again!/threadjackSent from Tapatalk
