Intel 2600cp and 8 extra SATA ports

A number of us have been using the dual Xeon 2670 setup with this motherboard.  The version I have used is the 2600cp2 that only has 6 SATA ports.  The Intel 2600CP version has an additional 8 SATA/SAS 3gb connections with optional Intel C600 Raid upgrade keys.

 

Has anyone used these additional 8 ports?  Do they need the upgrade keys to utilize them?  Do they work with unRaid?
