(SOLVED) Reducing number of disks...is parity-check necessary?

Featured Replies

I am trying to reduce the number of disks in my array while upgrading the remaining ones to bigger disks.

I now have 3 old 2TB drives that I have moved all data to other, bigger drives from, making them empty...is it possible to just take them out, do a new-config and set the parity as valid, manually, or will a parity check be necessary to maintain valid parity?

If that is possible, can I then swap one of the two remaining 2TB drives for a 3TB drive and start a rebuild, or is that set of steps asking for trouble?

Not unless you clear, i.e., write all zeros, before removing them.

Ah, ok...good thing I asked and thanks for setting me straight...so since zero'ing two drives might actually end up taking as long or longer than doing a full parity check, I wouldn't be saving any time with that...guess I'll have to take another trip to the server's location then.

It would take longer, the main advantage is that the array would stay protected.
