December 11, 20178 yr Is the Intel RES2CV360 any good for use with a 24 disk array. Which HBA offer best bandwith and speed when connected with 2 SFF 8087 cables, will the Dell Perc H310 do? Or should I go with an Intel RES2SV240? Edited December 11, 20178 yr by dikkiedirk

A PCI 3.0 HBA would be best for 24 disks if your CPU/board supports it, e.g., LSI 9207-8i
December 11, 20178 yr Author Thanks Johnnie, does using the H310 hurt performance much? I have them lying around. Will using 2 of them, each with one cable help?
December 11, 20178 yr You'll get between 2500 and 3000MB/s for all disks, so 100 to 125MB/s each during a check or rebuild. You can't have 2 HBAs connected to the same expander, you can have 2 expanders on the same HBA.
December 12, 20178 yr Author Is this strictly a PCI-E limitation? Will an M1015 perform better? Can the 9207-8i be bought below 100 USD. I see some from China and Hongkong, but don't in those are legit. I am in the Netherlands BTW. Would the Dell GTP9G LSI SAS9217-8i 9207-8i RAID/HBA be an option. It are server pulls and the seller is offering it with IR or IT firmware and FH or HH bracket. like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-SAS-9217-8i-GTP9G-PCI-Express-x8-6Gbps-8-port-SAS-SATA-RAID-Card-/202138468480?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c4 Edited December 12, 20178 yr by dikkiedirk

It's a PCIe 2.0 limitation, M1015 will be the same. 38 minutes ago, dikkiedirk said: Can the 9207-8i be bought below 100 USD. I bough mine used for about $70, I prefer used server pull over new from China every time. 39 minutes ago, dikkiedirk said: Would the Dell GTP9G LSI SAS9217-8i 9207-8i RAID/HBA be an option Yes, the 9217 is the OEM version of the 9207.
December 12, 20178 yr Author Thanks, the controller will fit nicely in a PCI-E 3.0 x8 slot on my E5-2670 motherboard I hope. The RES2CV360 will be hooked up with 6 SFF8087 cables to a Supermicro SAS846A backplane without expander chips. Hope that will work. I can get the 9217/9207-8i for 89 Euros incl P&P here in Europe.
December 12, 20178 yr Author Is it easy to flash such a card to IT mode? That will be necessary won't it?

No, I have one server with 2 x RES2SV240 connected to a 9207, it's using 2 tower cases connected by an external SAS cable, one with 18 disks and the other with 12, I have a pic I posted the other of the smaller tower with 12 disks:
December 12, 20178 yr Author I will have to find a way to mount the expander in my supermicro chassis. I almost wish there were some non-functional bare low profile pcie cards that I could use as a carrier for the expander. I have at least 4 free pci-e slots in the chassis. Do you know of any sff 8087 cables with 90 degree angled connectors?
