Does unraid have to run off a USB or can it run off the msata  drive attached to motherboard?

It is supposed to boot from USB. It then copies all necessary files to RAM and runs from there. If you search in the forums you will find ways to adapt it so that it mostly uses another disk, e.g. SSD. It still needs the USB for the license key.
