December 13, 20178 yr Hello, ive had unraid for a few years and never had any issues or really needed help but im not sure the best path to take for this. i recently (2 months ago) upgraded from 5.0 to 6.35. i also upgraded my hardware since my gaming pc got an update. i use this server 95% for media. i keep a few files backed up but mostly for ripped bluerays. my tower and mb had space for 6 drives. i needed to add a 7th drive (a 6tb wd red) and added a 4 port pcie card (io crest SI-PEX40064) and a rosewill 3x 5.25 to 4x 3.25 hot swap box. now when i transfer i get alot of errors and some transfers just stop all together. all my transfers are going from a windows 10 machine to the smb folder. i only get errors when the 6tb in the roswill cage attached to the 4 port pci card is set as my parity. if i start the array without the parity and transfer it works fine. so im not sure if its a bad drive, a bad cage, or a bad card. ive attached the system spec and smart drive sheet. the reallocated sector count is what worries me. if theres any more info you may need let me know. im a super noob with this stuff. im in the return window for my drive so if thats the safe bet i can just wipe it and get it swapped. December 13, 20178 yr On one hand, you probably have had some cable or cage issues resulting in UDMA CRC errors - it might possibly also be the controller card port, but less likely. But the drive itself has reallocated lots of sectors, so you do want to make use of your warranty on the drive.
December 13, 20178 yr Author it stinks that i had to add 3 variables at once. and i thought about the cables and card but the reallocated sectors is what stood out the most. any good way to test the cable? or just swap and see? also. i had a hard time finding this info but whats an "acceptable" amount of errors for the UDMA CRC. and whats "acceptable" for the reallocated sector amount. the best i read is that as long as it doesnt change, but most of those posts had 1 to12....no 1700.
December 13, 20178 yr It need not be anything wrong with the cable - it might just as well be that it wasn't fitted fully. But your main task is to replace your ailing disk. The reallocated sectors weren't caused by any issues with the data cable. Until now, the disk has managed to reallocate any sectors it has found problems with. But that doesn't mean you have sectors that are totally unreadable but haven't been found yet, and more sectors are likely to show up with read errors.
December 13, 20178 yr Author Ok thanks for the help! Ill check cables and card and make sure theyre snug and replace the drive. Thanks!
