WAN/Internet Connection Issues

Featured Replies

Recently I was trying to setup deluge/VPN and a couple other stuff so I could pull them off my local PC.

My unraid box has been used only as a file server for a long while now.

My current line speeds are 400/30.

MB: Supermicro - X10SL7-F

Eth1 nic is currently inactive.

The server is also connected to a 1GB HP Switch/Cat6 cable...same as my local PC.

IP is given by DHCP reservation.

From Unraid (version 6.3.5)...Internet speeds are just downright horrible.   LAN speeds are just fine....transferring between PC no issues.

Using Deluge,...I am only able to get 200 KiB/s download max.

Thinking it was my current VPN.ac....I signed up for PIA.  Same Results.

Disabled VPN....still getting the same slow speeds.

Installed the speedtest plugin.....several tests to local Houston servers.

Every test had high ping times - 600ms +

And downloads at best did 2-5 Mbit/s

On my local PC...doing the same tests above (vpn/speedtests) I can pretty much max out the line upload/download with no problems.

Updated everything I could and rebooted the server since it had been a long while since last reboot.

Tried different cable, different port on the switch.

Checking Eth0 in the unraid console shows: 1000 Mb/s, full duplex, mtu 1500

Not sure where to go next or what would be preventing the box from using full speeds....

Welcome any suggestions or options! :)

Hmm, odd.  Do you get full line speeds copying data to/from your server from a PC on your LAN?

  • Author

On the local LAN...speeds seem to be fine.

Copying data to and from and even Using Emby for streaming video seem to be ok.

I've not done any actual tests to see but I've been copying a few gigs of files lately doing some clean up and stuff.

That makes me think router issue, though you already tried shifting to a different port.  Have you tried restarting the router, or shifting to a static IP for your server?

  • Author

Router is a Sophos UTM 9 firewall.

I've checked it and couldn't find anything that would stand out.  But for a test I temporarily setup a Allow all from Internal to WAN rule just to be sure.

All the other PC's are connected to WIFI but they still get faster downloads than Unraid does.

Haven't tried a static IP yet...I'll try that next.

Maybe I should enable the second nic and try from it also...

Switched the Nic's

Gave it the new nic a static IP

I have never updated the nic drivers on this board.

Wasn't sure which to download...  Linux wise they only offer Redhat/SuSE from Supermicro.

So downloaded this one directly from Intel:  Intel i210AT

There a doc or anything outlining how to update drivers in Unraid?

Thanks

Drivers ship with unRAID, there isn't an easy way for you to update a driver yourself.  Do you feel that unRAID is using an older driver, or just hunting for ideas?

  • Author

Yeah.....pretty much hunting for anything at this point.

I think I have a dual Intel GB nic around here someplace...worth throwing it in there?

Sophos UTM 9 firewall

Are you running on their appliance, or your own hardware?

If a PC on your network can talk at full line speeds to your server, it wouldn't seem to indicate that you have an issue with the NIC in your server, but rather some kind of configuration/compatibility issue on the path from your server to the internet.

  • Author

For the firewall...its my own hardware.

Setup is: All PC connect to an Procurve GB switch > Firewall > Modem > Internet

That was my first thought to be honest.....so I started off scouring the configuration and stuff on the firewall.

But couldn't find anything, in the firewall itself, that was throttling or blocking the unraid server.

The unraid box is the only one having issues with the download and speedtests.

Guess i'll do more poking around in the firewall to see if maybe i missed something.

If you have any suggestions....it be much appreciated!

Did you ever figure out this issue?  I am having the same exact problem.  I posted here.
