Question about split levels

Featured Replies

Recently i added 3 new 4TB drives and i had completely run out of room. I have used unbalance to transfer some data across to my new disks, just so the others are not so full.

But i would just like to clarify my understanding of splits levels and how i have mine setup

My Share is called "Media" and set to most 'most free', 40GB min free space and split top 3 levels. Use all disks

Folder structure as follows:

Media - This would be top level or L1? And will be split across all disks

- TV Shows - L2 - Can be split across all disks

- - Blacklist - L3 - Can be split across all disks

- - - Season 1 - L4 - This will stay on single disk?

- - - Season 2 - L4 - This will stay on single disk?

etc

Does my above setup mean that each season could be on a different disk but each episode within that season will remain together? Meaning Season 3 could get saved to my brand new disk and most free mean it pick the disk with most free?

Or will Season 3 go on the same disk as other season, providing space is available?

Thanks

L3 will mean your Blacklist content will be on one disk

I have a similar setup and I have L3 setup for my tv shares e.g. tv_kids/series/season xx so each season is on one disk.  My thinking here is that all episodes in a series will be together, and if a disk is running low on space, unRaid will start saving the next series to another disk.

It's worth considering creating shares for each type of media, so you have better control e.g. I have

  • tv_kids/series/season xx and tv_adults/series/season xx - L3.  I have the kids content set to use disks that are spinning during the days (nzbget, deluge, tv recordings etc) and adults disks that don't spin during the days, to minimise noise (adult disks can make as much noise as they want when I'm downstairs!)
  • movies_adults/movie &  movies_ids/movie  - L2 (again, kids movies on same disks as tv shows to minimise spin-ups as tend to hop around a lot)
  • other_media/music/adults/artist  Disk 3, but also set L4 just in case need to split across disks in the future

Yes, the seasons can split and new seasons will go to the disk with the most free space.

Thanks all

I like mine to behave like  @johnnie.black except i have an additional folder, so need an additional level.

I have thought of running 2 seperate shares, tv shows, movies etc,

But i have a script that runs on my main pc, and havent worked out how to have it save media to diferent shares, onlt to the one andnthe script puts it in the correct folder(if that makes sense)

Thanks to all

You didn't explain the rest of the Media structure besides the TV. Are we supposed to guess?

You also have to also explain what you want kept together and what you don't.

Try looking at the split level part of the unofficial unRaid manual in the unRaid wiki. Google searching those key words at should find it as the first result. It has a Media example and says what happens with each selection.

Lets say you simply have a Movies directory under the Media share which holds all your movies and each movie is in it's own directory. IF so, then you're stuck using level 2 which keeps each individual movie on a single disk and every complete TV series on a single disk.

Under 'Media' i also have a "movies' folder, followed by movie titles. But since there is only ever 1 file inside the title name, i didnt think L3 would be a problem? Hence i never mention it before! But please correct me if im wrong

Media/Movies/movie name/moviename.mkv......As the mkv is L3, its only 1 file.

Yes, if the movie directories all have 1 file only an nothing else then the split level doesn't matter. Split level only matter with directories that have more than 1 file or directory stored inside.
