December 22, 20178 yr Hi, I have been attempting to setup a new unraid machine (previous one is from ages ago). One odd thing about my setup is I have a primary gpu (large/nice) that I am wanting to passthrough to a Windows VM guest, and secondary gpu (cheap single slot) that I want to see unrain GUI on. I have been able to figure out how to boot from the primary and passthrough, but I can't find how to make unraid choose the secondary one for its gui. I would like it to boot by default from second gpu (BIOS and bootloader on primary is fine). How do I tell unraid to choose the secondary to start from ? Note: due to my case and motherboard setup, I really need the single slot secondary to be the second one installed (installed in last slot), so switching slots isn't really an option. Thanks, -Dave
December 22, 20178 yr Quote I have been able to figure out how to boot from the primary and passthrough, To me that sounds like the base of your issue. You need/want to make your cheep GPU the primary video card on the hardware/bios/POST level. Have your system's video post video to your cheap card -- this will give you the unRAID console access you are looking for. Then in web-ui for your VM set it to use your nice video card. If your nice gpu is the primary and you start a VM, KVM grabs the output and it's gone (for console); this has been my experience with it, but I'm not a Linux guru either. Since you can't move cards around, you could try plugging your monitor into the cheap card at boot, and have nothing plugged into your good card -- this might force your system to recognize the your cheap video card as the primary standard-out for computer. If there is a linux configuration way of doing this, I don't know how to do that.
December 22, 20178 yr Author As I mentioned I don’t care about POST/BIOS only the actual Linux boot. Those can go to the primary card just fine. I am guessing there is a way to do it in either syslinux.cfg or Xinit. I would prefer the whole console and GUI from bootstrap on go to the secondary, but I am also fine with it just being the Xserver/GUI

Regardless of what you care about, @Jcloud gave you a correct answer. You need to figure out how to tell your motherboard to boot with the card you wish unraid to use. Unraid isn't set up to work the way you want it to. 2 hours ago, Jcloud said: You need/want to make your cheep GPU the primary video card on the hardware/bios/POST level. December 22, 20178 yr I'll admit my solution is more of a work-around. There might be a config fix, for what you're looking for, but my linux-kung-fu is weak. Good luck, hope you find your fix.
