Can I replace two Data Drives at once and have the parity drive rebuild both?

Featured Replies

I have two small drives that I want to upgrade to larger models. Can I replace both of them in one power down and have parity rebuild them both on reboot, or is it best to do one drive at a time, rebuild it then do the second drive on another power down?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Only if you have 2 parity drives installed.  If you only have one, then no choice but to do one at a time.

Parity doesn't have the data of any of your disks. Parity just has parity data which allows the data from a disk to be calculated from all of the other disks. If you only have one parity disk, then it isn't possible to rebuild 2 data disks, since the data from one of those disks is required to rebuild the other.

See this wiki for a better understanding. Everything about the unRAID parity array makes a lot more sense if you understand how parity works.
