December 31, 20178 yr Hi. Does anyone know if we can use Software KVM to control our Virtual Desktops in real time? https://www.stardock.com/products/multiplicity/ Anyone using this already? Does this mean using the same monitor, keyboard, and mouse I'm using right now, I'll be able to switch to my VM desktop? I wonder if I can stream videos with audio much better than using VNC? December 31, 20178 yr I use noMachine and team viewer instead of VNC where possible. Those do handle video better than VNC but it's not a native experience. Edited December 31, 20178 yr by 1812
December 31, 20178 yr Don't know any reason this would not work on a Windows VM. Does seem to be limited to Windows OSes. I have a physical KVM that I use to switch my keyboard and mouse (a Logitech unifying receiver dongle) between 4 machines - Windows VM (primarily), Windows Surface (non VM when needed), Windows work laptop, and NUC running Linux version of Plex (only need occasionally as Plex app works from harmony remote normally, so this 4th connection is used for ad hoc needs). I don't use the video switching of the KVM as the monitor is 4K and KVM video is just VGA (HDMI switching or expensive and can reduces video quality). Instead I have each computer hard wired to an HDMI input on the monitor. I have a harmony remote the will switch the keyboard/mouse input on the KVM and the monitor input with one harmony button press. Love it as switching is so easy! And works everywhere, including BIOS, selecting boot devices, OS installs, and non-Windows OSes. No software install or possible network dependency or lag. It does lack certain features that software solutions can provide, like shared clipboard, but such features are a security risk and I seldom miss them. And may reduce cabling clutter (which I keep behind the monitor so not a big deal). And this type of software install is prohibited on my work machine which makes this a non-starter for me.
January 2, 20188 yr Author Ok, Hope it works out for me. Primarily looking at this because unraid box is far from my work machine. All are connected to the network. Would love to have native performance even if via network specially "video-wise."
January 2, 20188 yr You won't. No software that I've found delivers "native" video performance. It's getting better, just not quite there yet.
