NEW Unraid - Designing User Share / Folder Structure & Split Level - some advice

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am in the process of building my first UNRAID BOX. YAY!

I have spent quite a bit of time on the forums to get my head around user shares and split levels and I am in the process of creating them now.

I have seen that a lot of people create a /Media User Share

Which may have;

- Movies

- TV

etc...

I realized that when creating my user shares the type of directory structure has implications on split levels. Especially when the folder structure within the User shares are different i.e. Movies / TV

Movies / Movie Title / Movie file

TV / TV Title / Season / Episode files

The simple approach is create another corresponding user shares i.e. Movies / TV and set the split levels accordingly.

I am curious if anyone can share how they have set up some of their user shares / folder structure and split levels.

The overall benefit of UNRAID for me is that I can control where my data goes and I can access individual disks if something breaks as opposed to traditional RAID. Having said this I also want to make sure my data isn't all over the place where it becomes almost unusable when somthing goes wrong :)

I would assume that most people are using Split Levels 1 or 2 across most their design.

Keen for any thoughts / examples

I have gone down this path with a split level of 1 for movies (movies/title) so files for a particular movie will be on the same disk, and 2 for tv shows/show for the same reason.

Other advantages to having more shares rather than an all-encompassing Media share, is you can control which drives the media lives on e.g. TV shows on disks 1,2 and Movies on 3,4, as well as min free space e.g tv shows min space 10GB and Movies something bigger (mine is 60GB)

I would recommend you make a share for each media type. If your Movies are stored in a flat structure then level 1 works for them. For TV, use 1 to keep each series on a disk or 2 to keep each season on a disk.

The new interface says how many directory levels to split - just remember that it includes the share name as the top directory level.
