Drive Dead? (Device is disabled. Contents emulated.)

Featured Replies

Version: 6.4.0_rc18f

I bought a new 4TB drive. Slapped it in via a hot swap bay, but it didn't show up in the GUI.

I then attempted to reboot and things went sideways (known issue with UEFI boot not saving the boot order on X99 MBs...).

That was resolved and the system now boots into unRAID, however, I'm getting a red X on disk 9 and the error "Device is disabled. Contents emulated." I grabbed the SMART report (I think) and have attached it here.

Is the drive toast?

SMART looks fine but since it's the infamous ST3000DM001 you should at least run an extended SMART test before using again.

Thanks, Johnnie.

Would you be able to point me to an article on how I run the extended SMART test from the GUI? I can't seem to find it other than to say you should run it from the GUI and then it provides the command line options.

If it is ok, how do I get rid of the error/red X?

Not sure you can run SMART tests on a disable disk using the wegGUI, but don't think so, you can use the console:

smartctl --test=long /dev/sdX

You need to rebuild to the same disk, before rebuilding check that the contents on the emulated disk look correct, whatever is there is what's going to be rebuilt:

I'll give it a go when I get home. Thanks, Johnnie.

With unRAID 6.4 it is possible (can't remember from which RC, but use latest RC anyway). Older unRAID versions you'll need CLI.
