June 4, 201016 yr I have been trying to run s.m.a.r.t. tests on my drives, both from unmenu and from server command, but the test does not complete and the smart statistics show up as user aborted at 90% in unmenu. I let the short test run for a couple of hours and still no luck. Any ideas why the test is not executing? Do i need to unmount the drives first?

The short test only runs for 5 minutes or so. Never for hours. When you request it to be run you must then get a status report after waiting the appropriate interval. For the "long" test, on a large drive, it can easily take 4 or 5 hours. It reads every block on the disk for that test. the spin-down will abort any test, so disable them, or you'll see that the test is "aborted" because you asked the drive be spun down. Joe L.

June 4, 201016 yr That seems to solve things. Can I run multiple long smart tests at the same time using unraid? yes... but the tests have nothing to do with unRAID... They are tests done internally on the hard disks by the disks own firmware to themselves when requested (and when otherwise not busy with requests from the OS) You can run them at any time as long as you don't spin the drives down. They will take longer if the disk is otherwise busy since the disk heads will have to seek between the sectors being accessed. Joe L.
