Separate IP address / Ethernet for Unraid and Windows VM

Featured Replies

Hi!

I am trying to assign a 1 IP address/Ethernet for Unraid and a another IP address/ Ethernet port for my windows VM's.

My intention here is to eventually configure my router to allow internet access to the Unraid IP address at limited times during the day.

I'm not too familiar with Linux/Unraid so my concern here is that i only have Anti-virus/Anti-ransomware/Firewall in my windows VM.

My motherboard is Asrock X399 Fatal1ty with 2x 1gb ethernet, and 1x 10 gb ethernet.

I have changed the IPv4 address in Unraid settings but when i check the router it shows that both Unraid and my windows VM is still using the same IP address.

Other steps i have done in the router is assign a specific IP for each MAC address.

First make sure your ethernet port (eth0) has bridging enabled (see network settings).

Next within the VM creation you need to select br0 as network interface.

Lastly you can configure your VM to obtain automatically an IP address (provided you have a DHCP server) or set the IP address statically.

Hi Boniel! Thanks for your help!

I tried making both ethernet port (eth0) and (eth1) with bridge enabled. Not both into one bridge.

And set the VM to get (br1)  as network interface since br1 is linked to eth1.

I was hoping Unraid will default to br0 and whipe the VM goes to br1.

It did not work out. My Tower IP address still becomes the same IP address as my VM.

Management of unRAID is always on eth0 (br0).

I suppose your eth1 interface is connected to the same switch as your eth0 interface. A 'plain' switch doesn't have network segregation, so both interfaces eth0 and eth1 end up in the same network. And devices with automatic IP assignment will use the same DHCP server to get an IP address.

To make sure your VM, which is linked to br1 according to your description, gets a unique IP address, it needs to have a different MAC address as used by unRAID (=br0). Normally when you create a VM then a (semi-)random MAC address is set for the network interface. Did you change that?

Both Eth0 and Eth1 is connected to my Asus router. Is there anything which should be set up with the router as well?

The Unraid and  the VM have different MAC upon checking network settings, but only the last 2 digits of the MAC is different.

Eth0 and Eth1 shows in the same IOMMU group.

When eth0 and eth1 have different MAC addresses (last 2 digits differ is okay) then your Asus router must hand-out different IP addresses.

Check your router if any "static" IP addresses are configured. That is a fixed IP address mapped to a MAC address.
