16 Drives Possible?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to transfer out of XP Pro as a server for my HTPC and am very interested in unRAID, but am turned off by the fact that there is a 12 drive limit.

I saw an old thread about the fact that 16 was once used for testing, but not for release?

Does anybody have a 16 drive setup?

I currently have 5 500gb and 8 250gb HDD and 2 RocketRAID 2220 8 Channel Controllers.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Ryan

the 4.0 "Pro' version has a 14 drive limit.  It is not 12 any longer.

Current limit in 4.x is 14 drives.

The upper bound is somewhat arbitrary, though there are many factors to consider when raising the number:

- memory requirements

- bios issues

- testability

- reliability (the larger the array, the higher the chances are of double-drive failure)

- sync speed

Don't forget you can upgrade any drive at any time to a larger drive...I've got 12 right now and don't think I'll need room anytime soon but if I did I would just take out the smallest drive and replace it.

  • 4 weeks later...

And you can always add more unRAID servers.  Tom has a sweet deal on a license 2-pack.
