June 8, 201016 yr I'm going to have to buy all new parts at Newegg, and I'm wondering what do you guys think is the easiest way to get started building an UnRaid box?
June 8, 201016 yr I'm going to have to buy all new parts at Newegg, and I'm wondering what do you guys think is the easiest way to get started building an UnRaid box? It's hard to figure if you don't tell us what's you plan for it: 1) Will or can it be rackable? 2) How many disks you plan to have? 3) Only Intel or AMD also? 4) Have you plans to run other services on it, like usenet or torrent client? 5) Price range of your budget?
June 9, 201016 yr Author 1. Not it won't be rackable. 2. 10-15 disks 3. Any reason not to use AMD? I prefer a quiter, lower heat system. 4. Yes 5. Price Range $400-900
June 9, 201016 yr As it is right now, the Intel i3 CPUS have some of if not the lowest TDP and power usage when idle. You should at least consider using a i3 530 CPU with a H55-chipset based motherboard. Doing so will also take care of your video needs too as that combo provides for integrated video.

Curious, given that it's so new, how is unRAID's support for Ibex Peak?
June 11, 201016 yr This is exactly why I created this section of the wiki: Recommended Builds For your situation, I would recommend the Budget Box.
June 11, 201016 yr Author Thanks Rajahal. How many drives max can you fit into that configuration? I guess 12 using this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817994027 But why not fit 15 drives using this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817994028&cm_re=MB455SPF-B-_-17-994-028-_-Product Would it just not fit? I notice they use the 2nd type of IcyDock in the MD-1510/LI here: http://www.lime-technology.com/products/md-1510-server
June 12, 201016 yr You can go up to 15 drives no problem, you'll just need an extra PCIe card to support the last drive (6 onboard + 8 through the AOC-SASLP-MV8 is only 14 drives total). I've used the cheapo ($15) PCIe x1 2 port card available on Monoprice with success. You may also need extra case cooling if you buy cheap hot swap cages, but the IcyDock models you linked should be fine.
