ok, how do you get the cache drive to work.

Featured Replies

so, i tried using a cache drive once before ages ago, over a year. but just couldn't get it to work, so i pulled it... i've just put an old drive in and set it as a cache, i mainly want to use it as a drive to download onto from virtuals. but seeming as though it is there, i might as well use it as it's enteded to.

but whenever i send a file across to the server into a user share, it just rights stright to the normal disks creating the parity as it goes and not to the cache drive.... why?

am i supose to manualy send files directly to that drive, which would be a pain having to create the folder structures as well in there,

shoudln't it be as easy as copying files onto the server into the "movies" or "tv shows" shares like i've always done, but the server automaticly sends it to the cache drive instead ready for moving later?

You add the cache drive to the array and then you assign the cache drive to each user share.

thanks, i did miss that, but it's still not working :(

just said yes to use the cache drive on all the shares except one... sent some files over to the music share and it put it stright onto the normal disk, not the cache.

something that i did think of that it could be is, each shares i have included disks set on them to were they can go.. should i be manually putting in the cache drive into the included disks?

The 'Included disk(s)' and 'Excluded disk(s)' only applies to array drives.  There is a separate control for each share called 'Use cache disk' which must be set to 'Yes'.

If you have a cache disk assigned on the Devices page, and you have 'Use cache disk' set to Yes for a share, then provided there is enough space on the cache disk, any new files written to the share should show up on the cache disk.

If you see the 'cache' disk on the Main page, and you think everything else is right, after trying to write a new file to a share with cache disk enabled, capture the system log and post it here.

1 last question i do recall seeing awhile ago being able to make a folder in the cache drive that wont move over.. what was it you had to name the folder or do or whatever, to have a folder tha wont move... ie like a download folder.

The folder name must begin with a period.

mkdir  /mnt/cache/.whatever_you_like
