June 18, 201016 yr Hello, unRAID n00b here with moderate linux experience, commands, filesystems etc... My question is this: I cannot get standard incremental backups to work with any backup - tried Cobain - which looked promising but it just did full backups every time because of the archive bit issue. I can however use Microsoft Sync-Toy as it keeps its own database, and does work in the incremental mode "Contribute." The problem with Sync Toy, as listed in another forum thread is that it ignores split levels. I guess I could live with that, but will it cause me problems once the one drive it writes to is filled? Just looking for advice. I really want this unRAID server to be my on-site backup for my computers as well as use it to serve media throughout my house. It serves media just fine - I am all wired gigE, and it works awesome, so nice work to y'all!
June 18, 201016 yr I would search this forum for "CrashPlan" takes a bit of fafing to setup but once done it is a very complete solution for file level differential backups
June 18, 201016 yr Not sure about how it deals with split levels - but I use Syncback SE and am very impressed with it. Easy to use, highly configurable. http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/sbse.html One license good for up to 5 machines, so you can cover several PCs.
June 19, 201016 yr There are a few older threads here on backups, take a look at this one: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=3631.msg47469#msg47469 My current arcvback incremental set goes back to Feb'2009, I store an online copy of the full backup on my unRAID box (which makes doing restores very easy) and I have a copy of the backups on USB-attached external drives which I take off site for safety. Regards, Stephen
