Cannot Delete Files

Featured Replies

Because other options are too complicated for me, I am going to stick with SyncToy for incremental backups to unraid - seeing that it ignores split levels, I want to open up disk shares.  I had been testing User Shares, and now I want to start over - as some of the user share information is on both disks.  The problem is, I cannot delete the files so that I can remove my user shares permanently!  I get the "Cannot delete...ensure not full or write protected" error in windows XP.  Using puTTY, I got in, and here I get "Read only file system" as well.  I can't rm, or chmod the files.  I am hoping that I have missed something simple in the hours of reading and this generous community will be able to help me.  Sorry to be a n00b, I really want this unRAID thing to work because I love the concept...

The operating system unRAID uses will make a file system read-only if it detect corruption.  The read-only condition is to prevent further damage.

Step 1.  Post a syslog

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting

Step 2.  Check and repair the file-systems

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Check_Disk_Filesystems

Step 3.  SyncToy does not ignore split levels...  nothing can ignore split levels unless you are writing directly to the disk shares.

Describe what you have configured, and what you are attempting.

You probably have the split levels set incorrectly for what you are attempting to do, and that is real easy to happen, since they are poorly documented, and difficult to set up initially.

Thank you so much for the reply! :D

Here is my syslog from last night starting with a reboot.

I will answer the synctoy questions later....have to work.

Sync Toy is Version 2.1.  I am using it to "contribute."  Since it keeps its own database, it seems to only write stuff it needs to to "work around" the archive bit/samba incompatibility - so I am happy.  Other backup methods and copying seemed to respect the split level just fine, spreading out my stuff over both disks after 3 levels.

Here is the Forum thread that made me think this is an unsurmountable issue:

Thanks for your time, attached is a screenie of my shares.

Awesome!  ;D

After running reiserfsck on both disk 1 and disk 2, there were a handfull of "corruptions" (7 on disk 1 and 9 on disk 2) and the --fix-fixall took care of them.

I can now delete again!  :)

I guess I want to know what this means for my unRAID server - is it not safe to store files on?  Is this amount of "corruptions" just a blip on the radar?  I understand I still need offsite backup - I just want to know if I can prevent this, or if I have caused the errors somehow?

The question of my understanding of my experience with SyncToy and splits as well as the Forum post mentioned is still out there...

Thanks again, you ROCK!

It probably indicates you did not shut down cleanly, or, your hard disk had a sector go bad, or you have a memory issue, or a power supply issue.  Most likely is you were in the middle of writing something when the server lost power or crashed.

You must stop the array before powering down, you probably should have a UPS for the server if you don't have one already.

You probably should get a SMART report on each of your hard disks to see if they are acting abnormal.  (You are interested in re-allocated sectors and sectors pending re-allocation)

So, long smart tests completed on both drives with 0 errors.

Memtest: 0 errors on 19 Passes - 17.5 Hours.

Looks like I am "Stable"

Any thoughts on the SyncToy thing?

Any thoughts about my minor corruptions?

Unraid 4.5.4 Free

Mobo:  Asus A7n8X Deluxe, BIOS 1008

CPU: Athlon 2400XP+ at stock 2.0GHz

HDDS: 3-Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EARS 1TB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s (7-8 Jumper Installed)

SATA Controller Card: SYBA SY-PCI40010 PCI SATA II 4-Port Controller Card [siL3124] (I am NOT using the 2- On-board Satas SiL 3112A)

Ethernet: Intel PWLA8391GT 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI PRO/1000 GT [intel 82541PI] (I am NOT using the onboard Nvidia or 3Com 10/100 ports)

Using the PCI controller card instead of the onboards will limit the entire bandwidth to 133 MB/s between those drives for parity creation and checks. That means with 3 drives on the PCI Bus, your parity check speed will be limited to below 44 MB/sec. With 4 SATA drives on the card, your limited to below 33 MB/sec.

Ha - you are exactly right! - I get about 42MB/s on parity.

So, would it be best to put the two data drives on the mobo and the parity on the controller or vice-versa?

I assume if I do either of these options, that I will then have to reassign my drives when unraid reboots - and I also assume knowing the serial numbers will be handy because the mounts will likely change?

Thanks!

Take a screen print of the "devices" page, then after moving the drives, use the "devices" page to put them back in their correct slots in the array.
