Slight problem updating to 4.5.5 - my flash is blank?!

Featured Replies

Okay so I saw the new code was out and wanted to update. However when I began to access the flash share I found NO files. Now th emachine has been running for quite some time with no reboot and I did recently notice that unMenu wasn't displaying some options correctly. I have also noticed that the array is VERY full - 96% - and that transfers have slowed way down for some reason. I was going to put some new drives in it this weekend - sure glad I didn't!!

I have managed to print out copies of my config pages. I cannot get to Syslog via the web menu in unMenu. Right now I'm not sure what's up. I *THINK* I have backup copies of my license keys - sure hope so!

Anyone seen this before? Troubleshooting ideas? I think I will yank the flash and see if it's REALY empty before I mess around too much but right now I'm kind of freaked out - don't want to lose ALL of my movies! :-O

Pulled the flash - all files are there - whew! Updating and then I guess I will have to grit my teeth and boot the thing. Could the drive have somehow become unmounted? anyone seen this before?

Okay, seeing lots of "unable to enumerate USB device on port 3" errors at console. Have I killed this USB stick? It's been operating for years trouble free.... :'(

I'm copying all files off of it now on a Winders box. I will try to run the Syslinux program on it after formatting and we'll see what happens. Tom, I may need a new license key <sigh> This flash stick seems REAL slow to boot too but that may just be it's vintage - it's an old Sandisk. The machine DOES seem to bootup but there's no network connectivity and it whines about not being able to find the network config file etc.

Copy of the files OFF the disk just completed with no errors - I'm pretty puzzled now :( It had 4.5.4 software on it, it HAD been running 4.5.3 ever since that came out without any issues...

Heh, it's coming up as a 500MEG stick during format - 488megs actually. Man, that's ancient!

Okay, seems I killed another USB stick - this owuld be the second 512meg Cruzar to take a bullet. This is the third stick in about 5-6 years across 2 different servers. Man the new stick I'm going to use is FAST, the other took minutes to boot this one flies!

Tom you've got an email with a plea for help. This always happens on a holiday weekend or some other crappy time. No access to music on the long weekend with folks over stinks lol and all my movies too!  :'(

P.S. Discovered that a MicroSD adapter was a no-go. Not surprised but had hoped that the tiny thing might work out. This board doesn't have a USB socket on the motherboard like my other - bummer. Just have to be careful not to smack the stick around walking by is all.

Wow, I posted that LATE my time last night. Tom had me a replacement license within HOURS and my system is back to running again - yay Tom!

Thanks much for the awesome tech support - I truly appreciate it! Nothing more heart stopping than having a license tied piece of hardware die on a device you depend on, I couldn't have asked for better service. As a bonus the systme now boots WAY faster thanks to this better flash stick  ;D As soon as Parity runs I'll go ahead and upgrade the Parity drive to 2Gig and get onto 4.5.5 from 4.5.4.

What a relief!!! Saved my weekend Tom, thank you!!

Which stick did you switch too? I have a Cruzer the kind that slides out of the cover and I'm thinking for some reason it takes a bit to boot, when you think it would be faster.

That sounds like what I've got actually. The first I had was an OLD pone - silver with no slide and only 500megs. It took minutes to boot and the dots would crawl across the screen. Now with the new one, 4gig, it races across! Now they do also have an even newer one and I picked up some of those at Coscto today - not tried these. Since my server boots maybe once every few months or for upgrades reliability vs speed is truly my concern. This last one lasted me at LEAST 3 years and honestly probably longer. I had another like it that died at least a year or two ago too.

All in all the unRAID is an appliance for me and if it takes a little bit to boot but ALWAYS boots I'm good to go :)
