January 17, 20188 yr So here's my random lounge thought for the day... any ideas on how to capture/harness the heat my unRAID desktop server generates and re-purpose it for good instead of evil? Right now, my office is comfortable, but in the summer it gets uncomfortably hot when the server is powered on (and its usually on 24x7). I understand large data centers build their facilities to make airflow, cooling and heat exchange efficient. Unfortunately, I don't have that luxury. If it hasn't been invented, someone needs to develop a "Heat Panel" (the sister to the Solar Panel).
January 17, 20188 yr This was originally why I put my servers in the basement - cooler down there until summer. That was back before I used unRAID and had Pentium 4s. Even in the basement I had to turn those off during the day in the summer time. In the Winter, Spring & Fall I left them on. It cut down on the amount of time my furnace was running.
January 18, 20188 yr Put your server into the same area as your water heater, and replace your water heater (if necessary) with the heat-pump variety- a symbiotic relationship.
January 18, 20188 yr Install threadripper into your server and put into your fireplace. Set up a exhaust fan to blow into the room. Crank up the Plex transcodes. Now you can toast marshmallows.
January 18, 20188 yr I've turned off the radiator in my small home office, still the warmest room in the house.Come summer it's going to be really Betty Swollocks though unless I open the windows. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

January 18, 20188 yr My office used to be noisy and hot. With my Windows workstation now a VM from my server (which lives in the basement with just a couple of wires strung up to my office), it is cool and quiet. Ahhh ...

We don't have a basement... next house! Sadly, things are only going to get worse if I add a fully loaded Norcoo 4224 as the production unit and use the current one as a backup server. Yikes!! January 19, 20188 yr Vent server exhaust either into your a/c return vent or attic during the summer. During the winter shut off the air to the room and let it heat it. problem solved. (Mine live in the basement currently in a wood and plastic clean room but will eventually get built into a closet or more custom permanent build in the house.)
