July 10, 201016 yr I think I'm either dumb or the user shares do not work properly and I've read the Wiki a dozen times I have the following setup Two User Shares Movies TV Both set to Export read-only Exception cj (Which I can only assume that means he can read/write) Valid xbmc The only way I can have somebody access my shares to read and another read/write I had to set up Disk shares set to Hidden Read/Write Am I doing something wrong? I've also tried setting it up as Movies Export Read/write Exception: xbmc Valid: cj The problem I get is if I have one on the valid line and one on exception I continue to get a whats your user name/password window even with map drives.
July 11, 201015 yr Author Ok, I'm really, really glad I was calm enough not to get really loud because nobody replied to this post. LOL I'm an idiot it appears. On my shares I had the following. Share name: Movies Comments: Allocation method: High-Water Min. free space: Split level: Included disk(s): Excluded disk(s): Export (SMB): Read Only Exceptions: cj Valid users: xbmc Invalid users: Export (NFS): When it should of been Share name: Movies Comments: Allocation method: High-Water Min. free space: Split level: Included disk(s): Excluded disk(s): Export (SMB): Read Only Exceptions: cj Valid users: xbmc,cj Invalid users: Export (NFS): I guess its kinda important to make sure that your users are all listed in the Valid Users spot even if they are in the Exceptions spot. I marked this one as [sOLVED] too
July 11, 201015 yr Ok, I'm really, really glad I was calm enough not to get really loud because nobody replied to this post. LOL You yourself said it earlier Both set to Export read-only Exception cj (Which I can only assume that means he can read/write) The "exception" field applies to the read/writable attribute. And you are correct, "cj" should be able to write to those shares. Valid xbmc The "valid and invalid" users apply to who can access the shares. In this case, ONLY xbmc can get to the shares. (so "cj" does not have any access)
July 11, 201015 yr Author I think it was just a case of temporary blindness and frustration. Seeing every other post with awesome support when all along it was right in front of me, but I was to stubborn to well see it. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. LOL
July 11, 201015 yr Way OT. We all need to laugh or smile once in a while. I just came back from a family gathering where shaggy dog stories (better than Charades) took up some of the evening. A shaggy dog story is an involved tale that has a moral and the moral is always a distortion of a well known quote or saying. Based on the last post, here is one for what it is worth. There were two professors of Education, Sam and Walter who were close friends. Sam started dating a "working woman of the night" whom he eventually fell in love with and wished to marry. However her erudition kept coming between them. Knowing that his friend Walter was a great teacher, he asked Walter if he could bring the love of his life to him so he could teach her and make her a more educated person. After one year Wlater said to Sam, "I'm sorry. I have tried everything, but I can not seem to get through and make her into the person you want. Now the moral of this story is . . . Oh yes, we do it as sort of a drinking contest and the tales get funnier as time passes
July 12, 201015 yr Author Yeah I don't mind messing up and even worse figuring out that I messed up and make an @$$ of myself as long as I learned my lesson and only my ego was hurt. LOL When I mess up and I'm sure most will agree when it effects the wallet then it really matters. Hey maybe somebody saw my issues and thought what an idiot, but at the same time maybe somebody in the future will read this and think "Ah man no wonder mine doesn't work."
