Can't enable SMART on my HDD

Featured Replies

Hi, I have an HDD that I want to sell so I want to run hdparm (it's called HDDErase in parted magic) using parted magic's live CD to completely wipe data and put it at factory settings. The thing is, hdparm wouldn't work without SMART enabled, and I also want to see the health of the disk before selling it, so I can't see it without SMART.

I have 3 other HDD's and they all show me the health data so SMART is enabled in the BIOS I assume. I use windows and CrystalDiskInfo program shows me how all disks have SMART and show all the health reports except my 500 GB Seagate drive. Specifically the drive is this:

SAMSUNG HD501LG 500,1 GB

FIRMWARE: CR100-11

SUPPORTED CHARACTERISTICS: S.M.A.R.T., AAM, NCQ

In parted magic live CD, when I try to enable smart, it gives me this error: ""A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options."

I don't know what to do because I don't know how to use the linux terminal.

Please help me enable SMART on my disk, thanks.

And this is someway related to unRAID? You could at least use the lounge forum.

Anyway to enable SMART you just type:

smartctl -s on /dev/sdX

Or whatever the device is, if that isn't working you have other problems, likely with the disk.

Moved there.

Note that the OP just joined, this is their only post, and they may be totally uninterested in unRAID.

This is what the parted magic does when you click "enable smart" in the GUI, but then I get that error I posted.

I see parted magic has a forum.

Hey Noobman -

You may have come with a burning question unrelated to unRAID, but take a look around and learn about this cool technology that have attracted the attention of Intel, Linus (YouTube celebrity), and many others for its handling of incredibly large arrays with ease, and exposing virtualization and hardware passthrough in a very user friendly way.

I am a moderator here and don't work for LimeTech or benefit in any way if you try it or buy it. But this community is built of people like you that stumbled upon the forum and decided they liked what they saw.

Well, i have a similar problem. unRAID dosn´t show SMART attributes for Disk 1. I try

smartctl -s on /dev/sdX

but that dosn´t solve my problem.

Typing smartctl --all /dev/sdc in a terminal  window show all SMART attributes, but the webUI dosn´t. Perhaps that is new since the update to 6.4. Any ideas how to show the SMART attributes in the webUI?

greetings

I assume you mean you tried

smartctl -s on /dev/sdc

If yes, what the output of that?

Sorry, my english is bad.
The output was: SMART enabled.
I have only a two disk array. The smart attributes of the parity disk show up fine, disk 1 doesn't in the webui and the diagnostics. In the terminal window everything is fine and all smart attributes show correctly.
I know that everything works correct in the past, perhaps this problem appears with the update to 6.4, but I'm not sure. http://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5a63cc7d5d0a9/unraid-diagnostics-20180120-2354.zip

On the main page click on disk1, scroll down to SMART settings, check that "SMART notification value" is "Use default", if it isn't change it and click apply, if it's already that change to a different one, click apply, change back to default and click apply again.

Ok, that was way easier than I thought. Thanks a lot!
