What is needed for APC UPS monitoring+shutdown

Featured Replies

I've read bits and pieces that it's doable, but nothing seemingly definitive.

1) Is there support built-in to unRAID 4.5+ to interface with an APC UPS (batter backup) via USB?

2) If it is possible via native or third-party support, what are the components needed and their installation steps and configuration?

TIA!

There is no UPS support built into any stock unRAID from lime-technology.

TIA!

It is very easy to add APC UPS shutdown.

It is one of the packages available in the package manager page in unMENU, the alternative/extended user-interface to unRAID.

It is described here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5568.0 and in the wiki here: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=UnRAID_Add_Ons#UnMENU

Installation instructions are in the above link.  Basically, down and un-zip the unmenu_install program.

Create an "unmenu" directory at the root of your flash drive and put the un-zipped file there.

Log in as "root" to the system console, or via telnet to the server.

change directory to the unmenu diirectory by typing

cd /boot/unmenu

Then run the program by typing:

unmenu_install -i -d /boot/unmenu

Once you install unmenu, you must start its web-server.  To do that you type:

/boot/unmenu/uu

Once started, you can access its pages in your web-browser at //tower:8080

(it is on port 8080 of the server)

The package manager page has many installable packages.  One of which is the APC manager.  You want to install both it and the "powerdown" package, also available in the package manager.  Both are downloaded by clicking on a button, and installed by a second button click, and finally , installed-upon-reboot with a third button click.

Basically, about 6 or 8 button clicks will get the APC UPS configured with the unRAID server.

And as a complete unRAID / Linux newb, I can confirm that it is that easy to add, and that it works brilliantly...  ;D

Is the APC package persistent?  That is, will it automatically startup after restarts/power-ups?

I ask that question because UnMenu is not persistent with my setup, and I've followed the instrux for that.  I didn't spend anymore time with UnMenu since I haven't the need to check on the server that often with that amount of detail.

If you press the button on the Package-Manager interface to re-install any package on re-boot, unMENU will add a line to the bottom of your config/go script to re-install any/all the packages you designated for "re-install on re-boot"

There is no need for unMENU itself to be running for that to occur.

And does this package work for CyberPower brand?

And does this package work for CyberPower brand?

Not likely.

I think CyberPower is APC's competitor, and this package is for monitoring APC UPS ( and those they manufacture under other labels)

CyberPower does have a down-loadable driver package available on their site if you already own the UPS.

You would probably need to adapt it to unRAID's Slackware based shutdown and /etc/rc.d operations.  You would also need to tie it into the clean stop of the unRAID array through the "powerdown" package WeeboTech has written.

Get it here:

Thanks!  I do realize you don't need unMENU itself to run the APC package.  It's just that I want to ensure I expect the APC package to be persistent across restarts whereas it seems unMENU in my installation is not, even though I did select to have "re-install on re-boot" already.  Hoping I don't have the same problem with the APC package!

I set it once, and it really is persistent!  8)
