July 16, 201015 yr Hi there, I am getting new roomates and one is taking over the room I am currently running my unraid servers on. I'd like to put it in the basement and network it from there - only problem is its kinda damp down there. A couple of peices of furniture I've had (LayZBoys) have gotten some surface mold while being stored down there I'm worried that the precipitation could ruin the servers. Anyone have any suggestions of keeping the servers dry and free of humidity? Would an enclosed server cabinet be enough? Thanks! Mark
July 16, 201015 yr Get a dehumidifier? I have mine in my basement Just going to echo what he said above. I have a and always run a dehumidifier in any basement. Now, if you do not want to work out any money for one you can find the "dehumidifier in a can" type stuff at just about any store. It comes in a plastic container usually and you just break the seal and set it in the basement. Depending on how damp it gets you may be buying a lot of them. It is usually cheaper in the long run to get a dehumidifier.
July 16, 201015 yr Anyone have any suggestions of keeping the servers dry and free of humidity? This may sound odd, but... Don't let the disks spin down. The heat generated by the CPU and disks in the server will keep its insides warmer than the ambient temperature. This should keep any condensation from occurring in the server. Do not put the server to sleep. The power used by a de-humidifier will be substantially more than that use to keep a few disks spinning. This same principal is used in this product... I would suggest lifting the machine off the floor or putting it into a rack. I live in a very humid environment. (the beach is only 1 block away). I keep many disks spinning all the time. In the winter the machines warm up the room. I've never had any issues with the dampness. It's always been old age of drives. I.E. Drives spinning > 2-3 years 24x7.
July 16, 201015 yr Also agree with elevating it off the ground. After a hard rain, I discovered water in my basement that would have damaged my unRaid server. In my new place, the server is elevated about 8 inches of the floor, sitting on a concrete block. I also added a dehumidifier.
