Adaptec SATA II RAID 1420SA

Featured Replies

I was thinking of using the Adaptec 1420SA raid controller just to provide more SATA ports in an older PC.  The manual does not mention anything about disabling the RAID functionality, but I figured if I don't create an array in the controller's BIOS, then it should just act as a SATA controller.

Am I correct?  I have never owned a RAID controller before, but can you actually use one just as a SATA controller?

Upon further research, this is a software RAID controller (Adaptec HostRAID) and there is no non-RAID driver available (unless Windows XP Pro uses a generic SATA driver that works).  Accordingly to Adaptec, the HostRAID is enabled and so the controller either supports an array or a volume (JBOD?).  Doesn't sound like I will be able to use this controller.

My SuperMicro P3TDLR motherboard has no SATA ports, but does have 32/64 bit 33/66MHz slots.  I am trying to configure it for the fastest hard drive throughput I can.

Anyone knows of a 64-bit 66MHz PCI SATA controller?  Can a PCI-X controller be plugged into a PCI 64-bit slot and work?
