January 23, 20188 yr I have looking at equipment to build an unraid server. I've looked at I7 8700k and Xeon's. Part of my debate is I want something that is power efficient and something that can have at least 8 drives. Cost isn't too much of a concern. I currently have an I7 running Emby on a another computer we like to run a docker of Emby to save more electricity. What can you guys suggest?
January 23, 20188 yr What else do you want to have running on the server? Almost any modern CPU can handle 8 drives under unRAID.
January 23, 20188 yr Author Emby, is the biggest. Maybe 4 streams at once and a couple of VM's to play around with. No gaming.
January 24, 20188 yr Disclaimer, I don't use Emby... Are you talking about running Emby Headless with a different device as the Emby client Or using your server as an HTPC with Emby, directly connected to your TV? The former is done as Docker but I believe the latter is done as a VM. VMs and transcoding are the big variables for your CPU requirements. If you are trying to manage several active VMs then more cores is a big help.
