January 24, 20188 yr Hello everybody, New UnRaid user here, I am in the process of getting things started. I managed to get UnRaid 6.4 working, however I am unable to get any of my drives to show up or more accurately, I am unable to boot to UnRaid while any of my HDD's are plugged in to MOBO. Instead I get the "peter anvin et al boot error". I have played around with boot settings in BIOS, I have tried numerous HDD's, tried the same HDD's in my daily machine (work fine), different Sata power and data cables, and different sata port on MOBO. My bios is set to default with only change is boot order to make sure 1st boot option is UnRaid flash drive. Machine specs are: MSI X99A Raider mobo, with a Intel Core i7-5820K (no oc), 8 GB of RAM, a Season 650 PSU.. I have run out of ideas and not sure how to tackle this problem. I am fairly new to UnRaid and a total noob when it comes to Linux. Please help. Edited January 25, 20188 yr by boianski
January 24, 20188 yr You say it works but not with any drive plugged in? You mean it will boot as long as no hard drives are plugged in? Can you get the webUI? Sounds like some sort of hardware problem. Simplify. Take a single known good drive and try each port one at a time to see if it will boot. Maybe a PSU problem?

I did try all SATA ports on MOBO with a HDD that I know 100% works. The disk is recognized in the BIOS, as were other HDD's. But when I boot to UnRaid, I get the error "peter anvin et al boot error"
January 24, 20188 yr Go into your bios and make sure your usb flash device is the primary boot device. Are you using an old motherboard? Some older m/b's would change the boot order unexpectedly.

The motherboard is a MSI X99A Raider, released August 29, 2014. Edited January 24, 20188 yr by boianski
January 24, 20188 yr To verify: you say it boots ok if only storage device attached is the usb flash boot device, but if you attach any other storage device, it won't complete the boot sequence? If this is correct, can you take a pic with your phone and post what you're seeing on the monitor?

Yes that is correct. I am happy to provide all the pictures necessary to solve this hiccup. Let me know if there is any additional images I can provide, and thank you for your help! Here is the Error as it displays after power up, with any SATA disk plugged in and powered. Boot order USB Config in BIOS The one SATA drive that is plugged in, have tried it with other drives and multiple drives at ones, same error. January 24, 20188 yr Still wonder if it isn't trying to boot from the wrong device. Usually there is a key you can press when it first comes up that will let you manually select the boot device instead of relying on the BIOS setting. Have you tried that?

I was able to get to this menu before boot up..
January 24, 20188 yr Quite the mystery. A few more things to try: a) Usually you see XHCI handoff enabled and EHCI handoff disabled. Also a little strange your USB3.1 controller is disabled. You might try changing those settings. b) Maybe try UEFI boot. To do this you can use our USB Creator tool and select EFI boot. Alternately you can boot unRAID without and drives, then go to Main page and click on the Flash device. On that page you will see an option to enable EFI boot mode. After changing that, click Apply and reboot. Get into bios and change the boot order so the "UEFI Key: SanDisk" is in first position. c) Boot unRAID without drives and then after it comes up, hot attach a drive and see if unRAID detects it (it should).

The way it seems to me that screen should work: The left column is naming a setting, and the right column is showing what that setting is set to. At the bottom, it tells you what keys to press. Currently, the setting for Network Boot Protocol is selected. I'm not sure it should be set to PXE. Maybe it is defaulting to that because none of the hard drives are bootable. Can you change that to something else by pressing <Space>? If you press <Enter> it should select the next setting, Boot Order. That setting is currently set to Use BIOS Setup Boot Order. If you press <Space> maybe it will let you change it to boot from a specific device. Could be a popup selection, or maybe you will keep pressing <Enter> until the one you want is selected. Then, I guess <F4> to save and exit?

I followed your "Alternative steps" and went to main page, clicked on flash and at the bottom I saw this, in the image below.. While your post mentions EFI boot, something I did not find. UEFI and EFI same thing? I set my BIOS to match that and BOOM! I also tried various versions of option A, but no luck, after that I reset the BIOS settings and tried option B. Hopefully everything is right and things go smooth going forward as I add disks to array. Gentlemen, how do I buy you a beer? Thank you! Edited January 24, 20188 yr by boianski
