NewEgg - 7/26 10am-1pm (PT) - WD 2TB $99.99

Featured Replies

Shell Shocker deal while supplies last during that timeframe.

I don't see it?

EDIT......oh pacific time

I must be a moron. How do you find the deals like this on NewEgg? I can never seem to find them.

Right on the main page (www.newegg.com) across the middle you should see a "PC Showcase", "Product Spotlight" and "Shell Shocker".  The shell shocker as of 12:56 PM EST is a Zotac Atom MB, but will change to something (I assume the hard drive mentioned in the title of this thread) in a few mins.

As far as getting notified of these deals, I believe if you subscribe to the Email promotions (link on same page) you will get them beforehand.

In for 1!

This is the EARS model, that's the one that needs a jumper on 7-8 isn't it?

Yep

Just grabbed one too. I figured it was safer to have a backup for my parity drive since its the same drive.

Just grabbed 3 of 'em. So, what's this needs a "jumper on 7-8" rhetoric?

You must install a HDD jumper across pins 7-8 on all WD EARS drives in order for them to work with unRAID.  Failure to do so will usher in the end of days (for your data, at least).

Good to know. I'll look more into that. Thank You.

Yes these particular drives with the "EARS" utilize the advanced formatting option that is new and up incoming or well at least WD says it is. Jumpering 7-8 disables that feature.

The jumper doesn't disable advanced formatting, it just shifts the partitions so that they line up with what unRAID, Windows XP, and most OSs expect to see.  Doing so erases all the data on the drive, though, so you must install the jumper before using the drive in unRAID (or WinXP, etc.).

Yes, I get a daily e-mail that lists what the 3 (weekdays) Shell Shocker items will be.

Got too busy at work today, forgot about it. Oh well, would have just been a spare (for now)

Thanks for the technical correction. In my mind I knew what I wanted to say and more or less mean, but there is nothing wrong with saying it right as you did. LOL  ;D

Are these good for a parity drive?

Are these good for a parity drive?

Wouldn't it be better to have a 7200 RPM parity drive? I use this for my parity drive:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148506&Tpk=barracuta%20xt

But I used this in the past with success:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145298&cm_re=hitachi_2tb-_-22-145-298-_-Product

In fact at $109 that is a steal.

Finally, if you are WD fan there is the black drives:

What is your DD test copy speed with that high end seagate drive? I would be very curious if you get higher then 30-35MB/s.

EDIT;

My benchmarks here.

My WD EARS 2TB Green Drive is in that range even with the new Seagate parity drive. The Hitachi 7200 RPM runs a little better, it averages right a 40MB/s.
