Problem with mobo X9DRi-LN4F+ and SAS2-846EL1 Backplane (SOLVED)

Featured Replies

Hello everybody,

I'm in the middle of setting up my first Unraid server.

I could pick up a cheap and brand new Supermicro SC847E16 4U 36 bay case, with a good server Rack to place it in.

I combined it with a Supermicro X9DRi-LN4F+, two E5 2670 v2, 128gb Samsung ddr3 ECC ram and an HP P410 SAS raid card, I will provide links to all components later.

I connected the backplane thru one SAS I-Pass to I-Pass cable directly to the motherboard although there are three  SAS connectors, if I understand it right the other two are for cascade configurations and as I'm not using the other backplane on the back of the case, for now, one cable should be enough but, I could be wrong. I have two more I-Pass cables although one isn't the same length and not the same nr. (Two are CBL-0281L and one is CBL-0108L). Unraid is working but I can't see my new empty Seagate 3TB drives. I have a Crucial 275gb SSD connected thru Sata and it recognizes it from the start. I've read a lot of some IT mode I would have to flash my raid card to but I never saw a guide how to.

I tried many ways to connect the backplane with raid card and without but, I could forget something I don't know.

  • Is this even necessary with a SAS port on the motherboard?
  • What do I forget?

  • are there some settings in the BIOS or UnRaid that I have to change for the SAS port to work properly?
  • Stupid question nr3: do I have to prepare my HDDs for unraid

If needed I can provide the diagnostics from unraid

Solution Edit: did have the wrong Raid Controller. Needed one to flash to an HBA followed this Guide and everything works

Thanks for the good and fast advice

You need to use an HBA to connect the expander (backplane), LSI recommended.

Do you have any recommendations? I guess my p410 isn't what you mean.

I don't know if the P410 is supported, IIRC it uses a PMC chipset, but it won't hurt to try, if it doesn't get any LSI with a SAS2008/2308/3008 chipset in IT mode, e.g., 9201-8i, 9211-8i, 9207-8i, 9300-8i, etc and clones.

Those use a Marvell chipset, not recommended.

For some reason, my browser, Firefox 57.0.1 64 bit for linux mint does NOT like some emojii or whatever was put there. Don't know how many people it effects, but thought you may want to be aware that at least 1 person has no clue what your reply was. I know the answer, just not what you said. :)
