13 sata ports

Recommended Posts

I just had a failure, and I am thinking it might be time to get a new motherboard that can support the max hdds of my new case which is 13. I will be streaming 1080p for now, but would like to stream 4k in the future. I use the Plex docker. My current setup had the following...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J56YSLM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I currently run 6 hdds, plus a ssd.

Not sure what to get for a new motherboard...suggestions? Budget for a new motherboard is around $200.

These are the cases I am thinking of getting...any comments?

I will be picking it up in the USA and checking it as baggage for my return trip to Mexico...so I need to keep the weight under 30lbs, and the value down to lower the duty. I prefer a tower vs a rack mount case.

Buying a motherboard with so many SATA ports is not necessary. You can buy an LSI SAS9201-8i for about $50 on eBay, or other similar card. This gives 8 ports, and in conjunction with a motherboard with 6 ports, you'd be in good shape. Why limit yourself to a niche motherboard with extra ports? The add on controllers can move to future motherboards avoiding having to repurchase a new motherboard with high port counts every time you upgrade.

That one is great, but I have a i7 processor.
Problem is, with that many SATA ports you're kind of in server territory rather than desktop territory and an i7 isn't a conventional server processor.

Best bet is to look for a board with 6 SATA ports and use a add-on card for the rest.

Consider a case where the front side is modular so you can remove any fans or carriages and replace them with trayless drive cages.

This scenario has 13 removable HDDs and up to 4 removable SSDs

1 5.25 to 4x2.5 SSD cage

https://platinummicro.com/istarusa-bpn-124k-sa-trayless-5-25-inch-to-4x2-5-inch-hdd-ssd-hot-swap-rack/

1 2x5.25 to 3x3.5 HDD cage

https://platinummicro.com/istarusa-bpn-de230ss-blue-2x5-25-to-3x3-5-sas-cage-blue/

2 3x5.25 to 5x3.5 HDD cages

https://platinummicro.com/istarusa-bpn-de350ss-blue-3x5-25-to-5x3-5-trayless-blue/

These may not be the exact ones pictured here but it gives you an idea. Also they make them in different colors but I don't know if platinum micro has the best prices so shop around:

https://platinummicro.com/search.php?search_query=StarUSA+BPN&Search+for+product=

ps. the case is a sharkoon T9 Value that you can get on eBay but it costs alot because of overseas shipping.

https://en.sharkoon.com/product/1678/T9Val#desc

Once you remove the fans, the drive cages will fit, but iStar has a design 'feature' that requires you to bend the support tabs in the sharkoon case flat with a pair of pliers so the cages will slide into it without obstruction. The box tends to run hot with this many drives and may require additional cooling (ie liquid cooling)

This is the processor I have... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J56YSLM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Any suggestions for a motherboard that is under $200? I will be using it only for UnRaid with Plex docker and streaming a max of 2 streams at a time...most likely only one HD stream.

Something like this?

I'm not up on what's the best one, but if you just need to know which ones will work, check out pcpartpicker.com. Just add your correct processor generation to the list (according to https://ark.intel.com/products/80806/Intel-Core-i7-4790-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_00-GHz yours is 4th generation) and it will show you which motherboards are compatible.

They work just fine?
Everytime I hear people talk about the 8SATA/2SAS cards, it is the more expencive Dell cards usually they talks about.

I am not a big water cooling fan for a 24x7x365 server. You might look at a Noctua DH-15 to provide excellent air cooling without risk of flooding or pump failure crashing the server.

Thanks, I can return the water cooling as I bought it from Amazon... I was just trying to make it as cool as possible. Since i do t have enough hdds for now i will space then out, and buy more quiet fans.

Look below. The Noctua is neck and neck with the best "closed loop" water coolers out there. Open loop cooling is better but my guess is you are not looking at an open loop. And then there is liquid nitrogen. ;)

I like the idea of a big hunk of metal to protect my CPU even if the fan dies. With water cooling, if it springs a leak you've got sparks and who know what happens. And if the pump fails, suddenly you have zero waterflow and the temp goes vertical in an instant.

And water coolers are loud!
