Protected Flash Storage (other than cache)?

Featured Replies

Does UnRAID still not support using flash devices (SSDs, NVMe, etc.) in the protected array?  I know you can use them as unassigned devices but that won't suffice.

I'm thinking of consolidating my VM cluster into a single UnRAID server but I need lots of protected flash storage.  On top of that I'd rather not run my VM's / dockers off of my cache pool as the performance takes a big hit during the daily operations (mover, download extractions, etc.).

It's supported, though trim won't work so depending on the devices used write performance might suffer with time.

So are people generally not using flash storage outside of cache?

There are a few using one or more SSDs in the array, I did for some time use an SSD only server, stopped because I was getting slow writes due to the lack of trim, but like I mentioned performance it will also depend on the devices used.

An SSD that has an overprovisioning pool will give good performance without trim.

If it doesn't have a hidden pool of flash blocks to rotate around, then trim is needed to get predictable write speeds.

There's a feature request for multiple cache pools. I'd really like something other than cache - that isn't as slow as the main array, but is protected - for VMs and the like.
