Restricted Start

Featured Replies

Dear LT,

A feature dubbed "Restricted Start" shone for a brief moment in one of the 6.4.0 rc's and was then immediately revoked. We had a brief discussion where a couple of us raised use cases for this feature (in a nutshell - allow for partial start + mount of the array even if the encryption key is not available - in which case, only the non-encrypted drives would come up; the rest of the array can be started/mounted when the key is made available).

Any plans to return to this feature? (Please?...)

Thanks!

An extended power outage resulting in a system reboot should allow the array to start even if we have partial encryption set up.

For security reasons my encryption key is not on the flash drive, or on the server. If someone steals my server, I want to only give them my cat videos on the non encrypted drives

But the cat videos can safely come up if the server is rebooted. If I am away it may take some time before the key is available (Some people in the household get very angry without access to these cat videos. )
