2 VMs, each with dedicated GPU passthrough possible?

Hi,

I'm planning on building my first Unraid Box.

I would like to have two (gaming) VMs, and do a dedicated GPU passthrough.

The idea is to stream the games with Parsec to lowend machines I have at home.

I was planning on using a Ryzen Threadripper CPU with a X370 motherboard.

Now I wonder: I read that Unraid needs it's own dedicated Videocard. So this means I have to have three GPU's in the system in total?

Can I just add a third 'slow' PCIe gpu dedicated for Unraid in the slowest PCIe slot? Of could I use a cheap USB video card for Unraid?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Jan

UnRaid does not need its own video card, especially if you have IPMI function. But even if your don't, a video card is not needed. When you boot unRaid, before your VMs start, the primary GPU acts as the unRaid monitor. You see the boot sequence here. That usually covers the need for a monitor. This is not to say that occasionally you might wish you had s dedicated monitor, but I don't have one on my server and it is very seldom I miss it.

That said, a third monitor is a possibility depending on your motherboard and number of slots. But often a slot is better used for a disk controller, 10 gigabit lan card, or USB card, versus a third video card.
