NAS randomly powering down, UPS question

I have recently given my Plex access to more people than I am used to having and am currently upgrading my motherboard to a Supermicro MBD-X10DRL-I ATX Server Motherboard Dual LGA 2011 R3 Intel C612 with two Intel Xeon E5-1620 V4 Broadwell-EP 3.5 GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 10MB shared cache L3 Cache LGA 2011-3 processors and replacing my PSU with an EVGA EQ 850W 80 plus gold PSU. My first question would be, where would I look in log files to find out why my system is randomly powering down? Secondly, I think my current PSU has outlived it's life span and I am shopping for a new PSU and came across this: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842301698&ignorebbr=1 which seems to only have a "data" port in the form of an ethernet cable and not USB as I currently use with this rig. I see that the UPS settings section of UnRaid does have a section for "ether" as an option. Does this basically just mean that the UPS gets it's own (which I would assign) static IP and this is how it communicates with my server? Are there any benefits / drawbacks or other reasons why this would benefit me vs. a USB based connection? I've never really had any experience with UPS's that utilize ethernet as a communication option but I'm fine with that if it's the better option. 

 

To be completely honest I have no idea why the system is powering down randomly and am only assuming it's because it's transcoding more streams than usual (I am currently using a several year old board and CPU) or if there are other underlying issues I need to address. The server needed needed upgraded anyway, I just don't want to find that I've spent all of this time any money to find out it was something simple that could have been resolved with a simple config change.

 

Thanks very much in advance to anyone who can help. Anyone wishing to follow my upgrade on this build can be followed here. I have the CPUs and heatsinks, I am still awaiting the motherboard and RDIMM RAM. Also a giant super thanks to CHBMD to probably saving me at least one reship of HSF's as this board sure does cram these CPUs quite close to one another.

The UPS doesn’t send data via ethernet. APC uses custom USB cables that have an Ethernet connector on one end, but still a usb cable.

 

As far as the shutdowns, install the Fix Common Problems plugin and run it in troubleshooting mode. There’s a good chance it will catch something.

Not much point having a dual CPU mobo with a single CPU, although you can run one CPU only.

Comes down to how much processing power you want and how much you want to spend.

You posted that you have more people that will be accesssing Plex. You should probably check the passmark scores for any cpu you are considering. Figure a score of 2000 needed for each concurrent user.

CHBMB you're absolutely correct. I gave myself an end of the year bonus and went off half cocked and should have done more research into this build. I'm just so used to building single CPU rigs that a lot of these issues were never things I'd had to consider. I've been in contact with Supermicro support and explained my situation and the build I'd like to do. to start off with. According to the support people I've spoken to at Supermicro and from the architecture diagram of the board, I should be OK to start this with only one CPU. The only drawback being that I will not be able to utilize PCI slot 4 (and of course the 4 memory slots for the 2nd CPU). I also have the new PSU as mentioned above which supports two CPU's with 12V power and should be plenty to power this board, 20 drives, and 2 E5's. This is simply a $ issue but even this is a huge upgrade from what I currently have. In another couple of weeks, I'll be able to get the 2nd CPU and 4 more RAM chips. The HSF's I've chosen are these: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101683 which do jut out about 1/8th of an inch on one side. I have the air flow of this rig running front to back, bottom to top and right to left (the motherboard sits on the right side of the chassis). I have done some measuring and I believe that facing one fan blowing up, and the other blowing back, they will both fit even though like yours it will be right. I will update this thread as I acquire the new parts. Thank you so much for all of the sage advice.

 

Also, wgstarks, I've started the Troubleshooting mode. How long does this normally take? It's been well over a day now and it's still showing as running.

Troubleshooting mode will basically continuously monitor your system and keep a record that won't be lost on reboot/crash in the hopes of catching whatever event is causing the crash.

That's pretty much the same as my build other than the RAM.  I bought engineering sample E5-2630 CPUs though.  (QK3G)

As I was typing my server literally just randomly powered off. Where do I go to see the logs from this test to try and diagnose the issue? At the moment it was only one person on my Plex and one kodi box that is doing transcoding on it's end, so now I'm thinking this isn't the issue.

And CHBMD, this RAM was on Supermicro's page as tested and supported so I believe it will work out fine. I definitely should have done more research on a dual processor builds before attempting this as it was my first time doing so. I've build hundreds of servers and had to match components etc, but this honestly just threw me for a loop. Glad I've learned my lesson even though it was the hard way and hopefully can help someone else down the line before they make the same mistakes I did.

You should probably ask in the FCP support thread. I know this mode can create issues if it runs for too long (several weeks maybe), but I think you'll get much more informed answers in that thread.
