walkities Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 Hey everybody, New here but wanted to reach out before taking the first step on building my first UnRaid server. For years I've been using external hard drives on my Windows PC to store Shows/Movies and other work related files. Currently I've got about 6TB worth of data and my Externals are running out of space but I've also wanted to build a NAS for sometime now just didn't know where to start. I recently replaced my current Windows PC's motherboard, Ram and processor and was going to build an Unraid server from new parts but thought this might save me money as the parts I replaced still worked fine but just couldn't handle newer games (thus the upgrade). These are the parts I would hope to use (links below): Motherboard: Asus - P6TD Deluxe ATX LGA1366 Motherboard CPU: Intel - Core i7-950 3.06GHz Quad-Core Processor Ram: Corsair - XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 Memory Case: Cooler Master - Cosmos ATX Full Tower Case PSU: Corsair - 1000W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (what I have right now but would use this in gaming PC and would purchase something smaller unless unadvised) I've also got a 250GB SSD not being used which I figured I could use for a cache drive (I think). Ill most likely buy new hard drives (either 3-4 4TB or 2-3 8TB WD Reds) as this is something I want to not worry about for at least a few years but also want something that can easily be expanded on as I need space. Don't know much about the parts listed but would these suffice to handle the build? I primarily would only be using for streaming content to my Kodi boxes (max 3 in house and very rarely at the same time) but also want to use Emby (Docker or whatever is preferred) to manage the meta data of the media. I wont be using Plex for this either. tdallen Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 Hello and welcome. That build is more than likely to work fine for basic NAS and a few Dockers, it's using quality name brand components. You might want more RAM over time? It sounds like you have all these parts now, from your prior machines, so give it a try with an unRAID trial license. I'd definitely go with 8TB drives, by the way.
whipdancer Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 These will work just fine. No point in spending money on those items until you know they won't serve your needs. It sounds like you will be purchasing a new PSU. If that's the case focus on quality, but you won't need 1000W. You also don't say if you have buy a case. If you already own it, you're good to go. I did go through a few cases before I found the one I have now. I do like it, but there are alternatives that will hold just as many HD's - so if you are buying, spend some time considering your upgrade strategy for your data drives (many smaller drives, fewer large drives).

Will be looking for a new power supply, with the success of the current 1000W corsair I've been using probably stick with that brand unless someone can recommend something else. Definitely have to buy a new case, I was going to use the current (and older) Cooler Master for the Unraid server and look into a new Fractal or NZXT for the work/gaming computer just so I can have something smaller and with less weight, this one is a beast and has to sit on the floor which I want to change with a smaller case. I considered looking into buying more Ram right off the hop for this, I think this MB only holds 24GB of Ram so might look into that depending on costs but probably hold off for now and see how the server performs I suppose. Thanks for the help, as suggested maybe once I swap everything over for the work/gaming PC Ill start with a trial license to see how everything performs and if I can actually get it up and running.

I also agree, and would shoot for a 600-650W if I was you, save a little green.
