NiiWii Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Hi guys, I'm at a loss regarding my Supermicro X9DRI-LN4F+ board. I want to try unRaid Performance in a home virtualization environment. But for some reason or another i just can't get the board to actually boot from my Kingston Datatraveler SE9 G2 USB3.0 16GB. This stick works fine in my 2017 desktop PC. Other OSes boot just fine, Windows installation media or even ESXi start. The stick is recognized as such in the BIOS, not as a hard drive, not sure if that's correct. To be honest, the reason i would like to try unRaid is mainly a slim hypervisor with good passthrough support and software RAID. I have tried some Intenso and even SanDisk flash drives, unsuccessfully, as you might have guessed. Also I have tried manually creating the flash drive, and with the Windows wizard. I appreciate any help or suggestions!
JorgeB Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 There are a lot of users using that board with unRAID, so it's something on your end, most likely the flash drive(s) you're using, for some yet unknown reason there's sometimes issues with some flash drives/boards combo.
NiiWii Posted February 14, 2018 Author Posted February 14, 2018 The drive is formatted in FAT32, and it does work in my MSI Z270i. Do i need to boot it in UEFI though? I have only tried that once...
wgstarks Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Have you tried a usb 2 drive. Some people have reported problems booting from usb 3 drives/ports.
NiiWii Posted February 14, 2018 Author Posted February 14, 2018 I'm currently trying to get it installed on a Kingston DTSE9 USB2.0 8GB, but the wizard keeps getting stuck at syncing file system... will post as soon as i have anything new
NiiWii Posted February 14, 2018 Author Posted February 14, 2018 Just manually installed it, as the wizard refuses to finish. Again, i can boot on my desktop machine, but not on the supermicro. I just reset everything in the bios, and redid all the settings detailed in this post, although i dont have any setting similar to the Emulation Type thing, which seems kind of important... Edit: Just saw that this stick is recognized as a USB HDD now, interesting
NiiWii Posted February 14, 2018 Author Posted February 14, 2018 Am I missing some important BIOS setting or what is going on? I have the proper boot device selected, UEFI or not doesn't seem to matter, I have the USB controller set to Legacy USB Support Auto, Port60/64 Emulation Disabled, EHCI Hand-off Enabled. I'm at a total loss.
wgstarks Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Just to be sure, have you actually set the flash as your boot device? When I first setup my x10 I had to select just the flash in the boot settings and disable all other devices. Bios kept wanting to boot from a hard drive.
NiiWii Posted February 14, 2018 Author Posted February 14, 2018 Yeah, only boot options are Built in UEFI shell and the usb drive once as a regular, once as a UEFI device. And i have tried both several times. It just goes to black after that, and won't show me a screen for the next two hours (that's when i reset it)
