Best way to copy data from USB hardrive?

Featured Replies

Before stripping down and rebuilding my server (Which is now the unRAID server) I backed up all of my music, films, photos etc on a USB hardrive.  What is the best way of copying this back onto the unRAID shares?  I would do it through the laptop I am typing on, but that would mean forcing nearly 2TB of data over a 54Mbps wireless connection.  I can see that taking a long time!  Is there a way to connect the USB hardrive directly to the unRAID server, then control what I am copying from the laptop?

Easiest is to mount the USB drive locally on the unRAID server.

Then, use "mc" (midnight commander) while logged in via telnet or on the system console.

To mount the USB drive you can either follow the instructions in the wiki here:

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Copy_files_from_a_NTFS_drive

or here

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Mounting_an_external_USB_drive_having_an_existing_NTFS_file_system_in_READ/WRITE_mode_to_transport_files_from/to_unRaid_server

Or install the unMENU add-on, and its Disk-Management page will let you mount and share the USB drive on the LAN.

Excellent, cheers Joe.  I have already installed unMenu, so will try to hook the USB drive up tomorrow. :)

...this would give a nice plugin idea: a connected usb-stick/drive gets automatically mounted, backed up to a previously configured folder (maybe using folders named time, date & usb-serial or the like), is unmounted afterwards and some speaker beeps tell you that it's ready to unplug.

That is a good suggestion, I think it would be prudent to cross post this in the feature request area otherwise it may get lost.

You might want to look at the add-on SNAP. Think it could do what you mentioned and more.
