$95 and $99 - SSD Kingston 64GB V Series 2.5" SATA II - After rebate

Featured Replies

For those of you that need or want a solid state cache drive ... pretty decent deal ...

$99 at Newegg

$95 at buy.com

Beware, this drive utilizes a JMicron controller. In the SSD realm, it usually means the system will suffer from stuttering (system unresponsiveness) as writes/reads occur to the drive.

Preferably, you want an Indilinx, SandForce, Intel, or Crucial C300 as the controller. Anything else will result in subpar performance.

Are you sure? I have the 30GB version in my HTPC, and it uses a Toshiba controller... at least that's what I've read... I've only had it 2 days, so can't really comment on it yet...

I've seen mixed reports on the controller, some sites claim the Toshiba is a rebranded JMicron controller with improved cache. The benchmarks from storage review and legit reviews don't do it much flattery either: http://www.storagereview.com/kingston_ssdnow_v_review_snv425s2 http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1237/3/

It's tough to see and even tougher to photograph but stenciled on the controller chip are the letters T-O-S-H-I-B-A which apparently is a JMicron JMF618 controller but branded as Toshiba as they are the manufacturer.
