Replace Parity Drive with a Larger One (Solved)

Recommended Posts

I would like to replace my current 4TB parity drive with a 6TB drive; however, I don't have any available SATA ports for the new disk.   I believe I can do the following; however, can someone confirm as this is the first time I'm going through this process.

  • Perform parity check
  • Shutdown server
  • Remove current parity drive and connect the new one
  • Turn system back on
  • System will indicate an error in that the parity disk is not connected, so I assign the new 6TB drive as the parity drive
  • Start the array and allow it to rebuild parity

At a later date I will be installing an LSI controller card so I will add the older 4TB parity drive back to the array as a data disk.  At that time, I assume I can follow the normal process of adding a data disk... clearing and formatting it... there isn't a different process since it used to be a parity disk?
